This mural was commissioned by the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre at Canada Water, London, to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The shopping centre is built on the site of the old Surrey Quays docks, and the brief was to design a mural which would encapsulate the history of the area, and also complement the nautical theme of the shopping centre.
The design depicts the iconic Thames barge used for transporting goods in the 1800's sailing along the river, while in the background the London skyline changes from the Victorian dock warehouses to the modern city skyscrapers. On the floor area I painted the London section of the river Thames flowing along behind the Surrey Quays logo.
The quote by Fred Thacker, "Ancient river, changing never, symbol of eternity", reminds us that the river Thames is always constant, while the London landscape evolves around it, changing to accommodate the needs of the time.
